Milo Greene

RIYL: Of Monsters & Men, The Temper Trap The Shins, The XX
I'm not posting about an electronic group! Whaaatttt

I just discovered Milo Greene and I am in love. It's that mainstream pop-y folk sound which I'm pretty sure you hate, but I don't even care. This is what I like and I AM NOT ASHAMED. Milo Greene's music is perfect easy summer listening. The vocals have male and female harmonization, and both voices are soft yet so fluid. The music is very acoustic/ simply based, but I like that so I can focus more heavily on the harmonies and lyrics

Here is their most popular hit, "1957"

It's so good. I just can't.

"Don't You Give Up on Me"

This one focuses more heavily on the male vocals. The music is a bit stronger in this one, the sound reminds me a lot of Temper Trap.

"What's The Matter"

This one is a bit tripper in the beginning, with some irregular instruments and such. This one is what gave me the XX vibe with the guitar rhythm.

This is probably the fastest I have ever fell in love with a band, I usually have to warm up to a new artist. Maybe it's because this music is suited to my mainstream ears? I'm not sure. All I know is that I am a happy listener.

Neon Indian

RIYL: Pretty much all of the other electronic artists I have posted about

Neon Indian has been around for a while, and I had heard people talking about them, but I have never given them a listen until this past month. My Dad refuses technology and iTunes, and instead goes onto amazon and buys himself a new CD once a month or so to be his soundtrack for his drives to work and what not. Right now he is jammin to Daft Punk's new album and Phoenix's 'Bankrupt!", so he gave me his Neon Indian CD "Era Extrana" now that he's thoroughly soaked it in.

So, I think I like them. Some of their music gets a little out there and I lose focus and interest, but overall I am a fan.

My fav, and their most popular hit, "Polish Girl"

A catchy, repetitive little techno beat, a smooth voice, what's not to like.

This track is not on "Era Extrana", but it's also a fave.

Once again, there are the funky techno notes. Very passion pit- esque, which I love love love.

And my other favorite is "Fallout"

This track is a little slower with a slightly different sound, which I dig because without versatility I get real tired of bands, real fast.

So, I'm not in love with Neon Indian, but I hope to follow their work and keep listening for more.

Green Day Dookie

Green Day reminds me of my middle school angst days, complemented by the soundtracks of Lincoln Park and Blink 182.

I'm sorry, but this album really doesn't do a lot for me. The only songs I had heard previously were "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around", which I will admit that I like and find catchy, but they are not tracks I would listen to on my own time.

I think this album majorly lacks versatility: Although the songs may have different titles, lyrics, etc., I find they ultimately end up at the same chord progression and loud singing/ drum combo that makes me glad I'm not in my angst phase anymore. Dookie was their 3rd album or so too, correct? I would hope that by now they would be at least slightly branching out to different sounds.

My favorite Green Day album overall was American Idiot.

Oh hello Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I definitely know every single lyric to that song. It's catchy, relatable, just angsty enough to be a huge hit.

I think that overtime, Green Day definitely progressed and got that hint of diversity it need to keep their music interesting, but all in all, not a significant band for me.

Kavinsky

RIYL: Justice, Daft Punk, Crystal Castles

So, in short, Kavinsky is slower techno-y music. The album "Nightcall" is like thriller gone techno, there's like some horror elements in it and it's real weird but I like it.

That was good right? However, this is a mix of that song that I like even better.

This version has a bit more of a pop-vibe to it, I think it's faster and more upbeat, which is a common trend I find in songs that I like.

Okay, this one is so daft-y, I love it

Kavinsky's most famous track, "Nightcall" itself, it's good but once again, slow for my taste

I'm not in love with Kavinsky by any means, but hey, I'm exploring and trying to find new artists. Kavinsky fits my stereotypical techno-based music preference, but there's nothing absolutely groundbreaking about Kavinksy's sound. I would be interested to see Kavinsky add some vocal tracks or some sort of lyrics into later albums. That would be something new.

Massive Attack

This is the most unsure I think I have ever been on a genre of music ever. There are some elements of this trip-hop business that I really like, but then other parts are like what.

Okay, I suppose I do like it a lot. In regards to Massive Attack specifically, I really like the female lead's voice, it's high yet a bit raspy, which I find very unique and alluring. I also really like a majority of the basic beats to the songs. However, I feel like they drag and they make me feel like I am moving in slow motion. But, I also am not under the influence of any drugs presently, so I guess it's all in the ears of the listener.

I don't think we listened to this track in class, but I diggin "Paradise Circus"

This track has a strong focus on the vocals, which I am in to, as I previously stated. It's a bit slow, but still catchy.

Angel is a great one

I remember being really mesmerized when we listened to this track with the visual audio synthesizer or whatever that digital firework machine is called. This song has a lot of variety within itself, or I feel like it is almost several songs that kind of blur into one.

Okay, but I also hate this song kind of.

This song is basically just noise to me. I'm also not a huge fun of the male vocals in this track. It's like overly-mixed middle eastern music and I'm not into it.

So, in conclusion, I think I like Massive Attack, but I am also scared by it. This is a classic Die Antwoord situation, I'm afraid yet so intrigued.

WU TANG SUCKA

I like the Wu Tang Clan, but I fear I'm far too white and sheltered to appreciate them fully. This isn't really music I would listen to during my free time. I find their music focuses too much on their lyrics for me. Although I can acknowledge they are lyrical geniuses and can spit fire, I enjoy my music with a strong beat or something to at least sway/ dance to. This is more of a head-bobber.

I didn't know Wu Tang Clan very well before we listened to them in class, but one thing I noticed was a TON of samples I recognize from other hip hop songs/ mash ups

The piano riff in this song I've def heard a million times before.

Def heard this refrain before

And this is the only song I recognize as it's own work/ have heard before as a whole

I want to like this! I really do! It is just so slow and different from most hip hop.

D.veloped

RIYL: Girl Talk, Supermash Bros

Mashups: Ya love em or you hate em. I, personally, am a lover. I think it roots from my Music ADD, I typically have about 8 songs stuck in my head at any given moment.

D.Veloped is a mashup DJ who samples a lot of very current/ pop-y tracks and allows them to blend harmoniously. I am a die hard Girl Talk fan, so while I do think Girl Talk is a better DJ/ puts out higher quality tracks, D.veloped isn't half bad. The main difference in their sounds, in my opinion is that girl talk does a better job of actually overlapping the tracks, while D.veloped sometimes just does individual snippets of songs and plays them back to back. Both are good, it's just personal preference.

Here's a video link to the full album "Work Party", its 39 minutes and although it's divided into separate tracks, they all blend into one big track.

AND HERE'S THE BEAUTY OF THIS POST:

If you like "D.veloped" on facebook, you can download this album for free. That's right, everyone, I'M DIRECTING YOU TO FREE MUSIC. Damn, I am such a good person.

Here are some more individual links if you want to do more listening:

Also, quick aside, not thrilled with ACL Line up. All great bands-- that I have already seen perform at ACL in previous years. Lil' cranky. That is all.

RHCP

If we're being real, I really wasn't a huge fan of this album. I'm not that into heavy rock, and I feel like RHCP became a lot more soft and well, pop-y as the developed further on which is why I am a fan of their later work.

The only songs I really like are Give it Away and Under the Bridge

These songs I think could be defined as RHCP Classics, they are both have memorable refrains and relatable lyrics, which makes them so well loved. Give it Away is significantly faster and harder than Under the Bridge, but I think it still is less harsh and less-screamy than some of their other songs on the album. In contrast to almost the entire album, Under the Bridge is a nice, slower song about heart break and loss, who wouldn't eat that up?

As for the rest of the album... Sorry not sorry, I am a pop princess now & forever, that's just the way I am.

ALAS, no fear, I have not given up on RHCP,

The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie is actually in my top 10 favorite songs

First of all, HELLO COWBELL. Love that. Secondly, very catchy, upbeat tune; not as in your face as their old stuff. There's also more actual singing on this track than the loud talking/ yelling on their old tracks.

More all time faves:

All of these songs are their softer works...coincidence? I think not.

In Conclusion, I love RHCP, but not during the Blood Sugar, Sex, Magik phase.

New Phoenix Album

Phoenix released a new album this past month, and I've just now gotten the chance to listen to it all the way through. The album definitely has several break out hits, I will give a quick sampler of my favorite tracks.

Entertainment is the first track on the Album, and it starts the album off with a bang

It's got a Japanese theme to it, the real music video was long and weird so I didn't post it. Anyways, this song is catchy AF with a repetitive, funky keyboard Asian melody. The lyrics don't seem to be largely significant or impact the song's appeal.

SOS in Bel Air is great, I can't find a link that's not a horribly-filmed fan video from a concert. Sorry. Listen to that one on your own time, partner.

Here is a link to "Trying to Be Cool" and "Drakkar Noir"

Trying to Be Cool has a real Passion Pit vibe to it, lot's of funky keyboard/ techno transitions. This song emphasizes the lyrics a lot more than Entertainment, and man I love the lead's voice.

Fitting to the true spirit of an album, I think Drakkar Noir sounds extremely similar to Trying to Be Cool. Same kind of steady beat and funky keyboard track. While I think it's important for artists to maintain a distinguishable sound, I could see others arguing that their music all sounds the same.

Bankrupt! (the song the album was named for) is almost entirely instrumental, or vocals don't come in until around minute 5. I'm very cranky that I can't find a link to this online yet, the album is still so new that I guess no links have been legally posted. Dammit internet.

Anyways, overall, I love the album. Phoenix has a real soothing, easy listening sound that I can listen to whenever and wherever.

Ghostland Observatory

An all time favorite band of mine, I was reminded of them when we watched the LCD Soundsystem documentary/ I think they have pretty similar techno pop sounds.

Here is a sampler of my favorites:

First, the "cities"

Silver City (top 5 favorite songs of all time)

The main refrain:

Well, I don't come from the city,
I came here on the train,
In search of something pretty,
It's my heart I have to blame.

The american dream? A beautiful girl? I don't know what their chasing, all I know is that I don't ever want them to find it so that this song can go on forever.

Their most popular song, Sad Sad City

Give me the Beat

And somehow one of their less popular songs, Time

I don't really know why, but I will always be inclined toward techno/ electronic music, and Ghostland Observatory always hits the spot. Even though all of their music is full of funky keyboard and electronic sounds, I still think they maintain a good amount of diversity in their music to keep everything from sounding the same/ keep it fresh and interesting.

LCD Soundsystem

I LOVE LCD Soundsystem/ was real pumped to find out we were watching a taping of a LCD concert in class.

First and foremost, "I Can Change" is the shit I do like.

First of all, this song is catchy as hell: decently repetitive lyrics and upbeat pop-y music make this song impossible not to love. Secondly, James Murphy hits some real crazy high notes in this song, and I'm like, you go James Murphy, do your thing!

"Tribulations" is also my jam

Once again, a real funky techno beat to fist pump/ jump around to. This is actually the first LCD Soundsytem song I knew, and I had it on repeat on my lil' ipod shuffle for weeks.

I also really like Dance Yrself Clean, however, the build up is real long.

Well first of all, the whole song is like 9 minutes long, so that's already a whole lot of listening. Although the build up is long, there is some really nice harmonies and I like the real basic drum beat. But then, when the techno-fied jams come in full force around 3:08 or so, things get real crazy awesome & I love it.

The Shins

RIYL: Broken Bells, Edward Sharpe

The Shins are like a comfort-food band: always reliable to play for any audience or mood. And while I'm always down for that, I get a lil' tired of listening to them after a few tracks, but I'm picky and prefer faster-paced music so that's just me.

My all time favorite: Australia

How happy and soothing is that. Very Edward Sharpe-esque. However I have pretty much 0.00 idea what the lyrics are supposed to mean:

A dual tone under wall
The selfless fool who hoped he'd save us all
He never dreamt of such sterile hands,
You keep them folded in your lap,
Or raise them up to beg for scraps,
You know, he's holding you down,
With the tips of his fingers just the same,
Will you be pulled from the ocean,
But just a minute too late,
Or changed by a potion,
And find a handsome young mate,
For you to love.

The man is oppressing us? Love is cruel? There's a big man with fingers? I don't know!

Here are some more of my faves:

"The Simple Song" Aptly named. Still catchy and nice though.

Okay, and I'm pretty sure this one came directly off of a Broken Bells Album:

In conclusion, an easy listen, but nonetheless, enjoyable.

Beastie Boys

So, I struggle with how I feel about Beastie Boys. Sometimes I'm like this is super cool and different and such a unique sounds. And other times I think it's straight racket/ clashing sounds and I hate it so much. Another problem I have with the Beastie Boys is that I don't care for the voice of the lead singer/rapper/ whatever you want to call it. I feel like he is intentionally speaking obnoxiously and I'm just like stoooop. I get a Natalie Portman rap feel from them, and I feel like they are almost being intentionally annoying.

For instance, wtf is going on in this music video

However, one thing that saves the Beastie Boys for me is that I am a big fan of sampling/ remixing (as I expressed in my last post), and I think their work is revolutionary in the sampling sense. Even though some songs I'm pretty sure are just straight samples from other artists played back to back, overall, I think they do a pretty impressive job meshing sounds and making them their own.

My fav Beastie Boys song from Paul's Boutique is easily Car Thief

It reminds me of Girl Talk in the way that there is some slower songs playing in the background mixed with some faster beats and add-on techno/ DJ noises.

Anyways, Beastie Boys typically just bothers me, but I do like a few select tracks.

Remix City

I can't think of a specific artist I'm listening to right now besides JT who I just blogged about, so instead this blog is just going to be a compilation of my current favorite remixes. So basically, if I were a DJ, this would be what I would be throwing at you at your next club outing. Enjoy:

So, usually I don't get dubstep, think it sounds like a robot taking a shit, but every now and then I'm like okay, alright, this is pretty cool.

Sleepless (Loadstar Remix) -Excision

Okay, this next one is the "Original Don" Flosstradamus remix. This is the ish I do like. However it's not really the same unless you have it PUMPING out your speakers/ the addition of a strobe light or something crazy.

Then, pretty much the entire Project X soundtrack is awesome remixes, but this one is easily the best:

Kid Cudi - Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki Remix)

Speaking of Ratatat in that last mix, here's another with Biggie Smalls I love:

Also, I really like all of AVICII's mixes, I saw AVICII at ACL this past year and it was party city.

Anyways, I can be really into club-type mixes and jams, or I can really hate them. It's pretty hit or miss.

Joe Cocker

I gotta say, that SNL skit we watched in class with John Belushi actually broke my heart/ I felt so terribly for him. I mean, I know it was his fault for basically self-distructing himself with drugs and alcohol, but oh man that was just so brutal and sad.

I found this video when youtubin him and I thought this was precious:

He looks a million times better than he did on SNL, which is so depressing considering he was several decades younger then. But look at him go now! He's an allstar! YOU GO, JOE.

Also, I found this, which is pretty sad. It's a bad-lip-reading/ hearing interpretation of his song because well...hes's not super articulate.

Anyways, I love the song 'You are so Beautiful"

First of all, holy smokes, he is so sweaty/ ruining the romantic vibe of this song a little bit. But oh man, I LOVE this song. You could pretty much play this in any sappy movie and I would cry like a little baby. This song is so unlike his other works, so soft and sweet, & I am still a big sucker for how precious I think he is now that he is old and partially recovered.

Anywhoo, Joe Cocker breaks my heart, however I really like his sound and appreciate his versatility.

Haley Reinhart

So, apparently Reinhart was recently on American idol/ got 3rd place. But let's be honest, who watches American idol anymore.

Anyways, I first heard about her when I heard her cover of "Bennie and the Jets". And I was obsessed for like a week. Her voice is so smooth and different and I can't get enough.

It's also sung in such a different style from the original version, much slower and focused on the lyrics/ singing. I mean maybe it is weird for me to say this, but her voice is incredibly sexy/ alluring. Like siren material. I would steer my ship her way, that's all I'm saying.

She reminds me a bit of Duffy, in that kind of high/ scratchy/ cabaret sound.

Her voice is so hot, I can't even handle it, this is ridiculous. That real pop-y B.O.B. comes in and raps or whatever and that's okay I suppose, I just am waiting for the song to get to Haley the entire time he talks.

Here's another track I liked called "Liar", it's real angsty, and I love me some angst.

I also get a bit of an Adele vibe in this song, with the whole love angst, and her voice even has some similar inflections.

Anyways, it's nice to see an American Idol contestant actually doing something with their career, you go girl.

Paul Simon

So, I'm an idiot, I didn't know Paul Simon was from Simon & Garfunkel. That seriously just went SWOOSH right over my head. Especailly because Paul Simon is the soundtrack to my childhood happiness.

'You Can Call Me Al' seriously never fails to put me in a good mood.

Regarding the video, Paul Simon is half Chevy Chase's size, it's ridiculous. Also, I remember seeing this when I was little, and I just realized I had been under the impression that Paul Simon was Chevy Chase. Young Trickery.

I think it's those fun time whistles, but I always thing of Ice Age when I hear this song. Anyways, this song makes me want to go run a marathon (okay, maybe a 5 k) because I could just happily trot along to this song for hours. It has those triumphant brass/ keyboard riffs that are super 80's too, I love it. Then there's a SWEET slapping of the bass too. However, I don't understand the lyrics, or the whole "Betty" and "Al" thing.

Okay, and don't get me started on "Diamonds On the Soles of Shoes".

First of all, his African choir harmonizing with him in th begginning is chill-worthy, they are incredible. Then the song goes totally "Little Mermaid" and gets super upbeat and Carribean sounding, and I just want to dance. I gotta say, Paul Simon looks like such a geek, it's hilarious. He is a solid foot shorter than all of his back up men too, oh man. This music video is so awesome.

Anyways, I LOVE Paul Simon & Graceland, and would be so down to listen to more of his albums in class.

Air Dubai

Air Dubai recently came to SXSW, and I am real cranky that I missed their show (I didn't know they were coming until I saw people posting photos with them after. That's right, not only did I miss their show, I missed the opportunity to MEET them. Idiot).

I would describe Air Dubai as electronic/ hip-hop cross over, with some real poppy-techno beats accompanied by rapping and some heavy beats.

My favorite song is EASILY Summer Solstice

First off, the lead vocals in this song are super different sounding & I LOVE his voice. The rapping in this song doesn't astound me or make my jaw drop or anything, but the awesomeness of the chorous and the music easily compensate. I love the kind of eerie keyboard, and then like 3 minutes into the song it slows down and a heavy drum kick and trumpets come in and I just want to throw my arms into the air and sway.

Also, this always makes me giggle since I am a big Britney fan (sorry not sorry), Air Dubai does a cover of Britney Spears' 'Toxic'

Here is Britney's version:

This is one of those music videos that's like wait...what is the plot line? Why is she a flight attendant? WHAT she ripped a flesh mask off of that guy and he turned more attractive? WHAT? Anyways, if you value your brain cells, I wouldn't watch more than a minute of that.

Here is Air Dubai's version:

His voice is HAUNTINGLY good. I can't handle it. I really like this, however, I am a sucker for Britney's original.

Here are a few more links to some more Air Dubai Tracks I dig:

80's Rap

So, I have terrible news, I do not have computer access right now, so this blog is being done from my phone. And that means no video links wahhhh. I'm so sorry to have let you down, hundreds of followers.

Anyways, I LOVE this unit, I would not mind doing it for the rest of the year. I feel like 80's Hip Hop took a lot of awesome elements from Disco and Punk, and utilized them briliantly in the Hip Hop era of the 80's. There's often a real techno-y beat backing the Hip Hop tracks, usually with a bit of DJ scratching thrown in the mix, but none the less that electronic sound is definitely present. As far as punk, Hip Hop definitely has that rebelious, git-out-my-way attitude as seen commonly in punk hits of the previous decade.

My favorite band that we have listened to thus far in class on this unit is easily Salt-n-Pepa. First of all, GIRL POWER. That is so awesome that Salt-n-Pepa is one of the first all female Hip Hop groups, what a terrific trio. Secondly, 'Push It' will never not be awesome. The whole song is almost like a mash up of about 5 other songs, but you know what, that keeps things super interesting and spicy, and I'm into it.

And, of course, I am super into Will Smith, but that is largely because I have a crush on him. He is like a goofy/ satirical version of punk, and I think he is absolutely hilarious. His music is also delightfully clean yet catchy, and I have several of his big hits like 'Miami' and 'Getting Jiggy with It' on my mix CDs in my car.

In conclusion for this unit, I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.

DAT 20/20

So, as I may have expressed in an earlier post, I am SO excited about JT's new album. One thing I think is SO cool and unique about 20/20 is it was created as an album, not a big compilation of singles like almost all other music being produced today. Another thing that makes the album so different is that almost every song hits the 8 minute mark. JT had a quote about it:

"If Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin can do 10-minute songs and Queen can do 10-minute songs then why can't we? We'll figure out the radio edits later."

SOCIETY DON'T OWN YOU, JT

Also, I did something you would be so proud of, I put in the CD, sat on my bed, and just sat and soaked in the entire album at one time. And it was an awesome experience, plus I was super proud of myself afterwards, that was a whole 70 minutes and 2 seconds of concentrated listening, who knew I still even retained that long of an attention span?

However, I gotta say, I am a huge JT fan (not even a guilty pleasure, I have no shame in my JT love) and the album was SUPER hit & miss for me. I really loved like 4 of the songs, hated 3 of them, and the rest weren't even memorable.

Here are some of the ones I got reaaalll into:

Mirrors

I LOVE. I'll admit, the beginning dramatic guitar riff kinda rubbed my fur the wrong way at first, but then BAM JT comes in and KILLS it.

Don't Hold the Wall:

I LOVE the harmonies in the beggining of this song. So pretty. Then this jungle-y bongo comes in with some Middle Eastern sounding music and then things get real awesome.

And now some I really didn't like

Believe it or not, I don't like Suit & Tie, the break out hit of the album

The music it super busy/ doesn't carry a super consistent melody and it kind of gives me a headache. Justin also sings a ton of falsetto in this song, which is awesome and impressive, but after a while I'm like ENUFF.

and Strawberry Bubblegum

This is one of those songs that just got ruined by the lyrics. He's talking about some girl smacking bubblegum and I have to just not listen to closely in order to enjoy this one.

Anyways, overall I am content with the album, I'd give it a 6.5/7. JT forever and ever.

Elvis Costello

So, I would definitely rank Costello in my top 5 favorite artists that we have listened to so far in class, but man I really loved Pet Sounds, don't make me choose.

So, I did a quick Spotify check on him, and OH MY GAH, he has released like a millon albums! That's absurd, he may have the Beatles beat! Let me count right quick...22! I counted 22! WHAAAT. Also, he is only 58!!!! That's only 8 years older than my parents!! I am freaking out!!

While researching him, I found a clip where he hosted David Letterman's 'The Late Show', and man he is so cocky and maybe a little funny, but still very cocky.

Also, I did some more research, and you were so right about people being crazy about 'Alison', which is honestly not even my favorite song. Like seriously, when I was hunting for videos to link here, mofo Alison was the title of about every 9/10 videos. Get over it, everyone.

I really like 'I'm not Angry'

I really love this song for several reasons. 1) The lyrics are really easy to relate to, I've experienced the uncouth, fiery pangs of heartbreak, and this song makes me want to go egg an ex-boyfriends house or do something real wild and angsty. Also, just the guitar riffs are so awesome in this song, and I also really dig when at around 1:48, a rolling/ trotting sounding drum beat comes kicking in.
I also specifically like the part of the line: 'cause there's no such thing as an original sin'. All humans are dicks, basically, and it's something everyone has to learn to accept and deal with eventually.

I really love Costello, and would be so down to listen to more of his albums this semester.

Ben Howard

Ben Howard is a lot like a softer, less-douchey John Mayer. He is originally from England, and I read a lil bio of his on Spotify that said one of his biggest influences in his work is Joni Mitchell, so I thought you would like that. He only has one offical solo Album, 'Every Kingdom', but he has also released several singles and has performed at several big music festivals, including Bonnaroo and our very own ACL.

Here is a little highlight reel of Ben's work

There are some really nice harmonies on this track. I love to compare and contrast bands, and I am definitely sensing similarities between Ben Howard's voice and the lead singer of 'The Script'.

Very soft, very sweet. It picks up a bit when a pretty basic drum beat kicks in and eventually the chorus, but it is over all very easy listening. It's very lazy-sunday-in-a-hammock-esque.

I definitely get an Iron & Wine vibe from Ben Howard, but specifically in this song. That real plucky-guitar and Ooohhing and Ahhing is so folky and soothing, and I can get into it.

Similar to what I said about 'Beach House" last week, Ben Howard's playlist would be an excellent soundtrack to fall asleep to. One thing I was left a little un-impressed about is the fact that Ben pretty much only sings and plays the guitar. He has two other people that play a huge role in his music that are not as credited for their work. The wiki tells me that "Howard worked alongside India Bourne and Chris Bond to make Every Kingdom, with India Bourne playing cello, keyboards, ukulele, bass and contributing vocals and percussion and Chris Bond playing guitars, bass, double bass, drums, percussion, keyboards, accordion and also contributing to vocals". So common Ben, cut em in to the band name, or something, geez.

The Police

I love the Police, my dad has always been a huge fan so i have been subjected to several road trips/ family outings filled with the rockin sounds of the police. One thing I think is really interesting about the Police is that they have a pretty wide spectrum of sounds, or they are not bound specifically to one sound, which I often find myself noticing about a majority of bands.

Like for instances, one of my favorite songs of all time will always be "Every Breath You Take"

An Oldie but a goodie, I feel like this is one of those songs that will always be around. The beat isn't even super complicated and is actually pretty repetivie, but I don't even mind, it's too darn catchy.

And as I'm sure almost everyone knows equally as well, Puff Daddy's R&B cover:

But real talk, that's probably one of the most famous covers in existance. Also, one of the many rare cases in which I don't have a preference between the new and old version, I really like both of them. Maybe I liked Police's version a little better ahhhhh I don't know.

Another family favorite is "Message in a Bottle"

This one was my jammmmm on guitar hero. However, upon watching this music video I am a little disturbed. They're a bunch of blonde mop tops in suits! SUITS! I am so confused, what is punk.

Like, here is a glimpse at the lyrics from "Message in a Bottle"

Just a castaway
An island lost at sea
Another lonely day
With no one here but me
More loneliness
Than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair

Kind of depressing/ angsty, but not rebellious or punk by my standards.

Feel free to differ, but I don't really think the Police are true punk. I realize punk is an enormous rebellion spectrum, but I really think the Police are more soft rock than anything else, I'm not getting any real rebellious/ uprising vibes from their music.

Beach House

Hey guess what? You have pretty much exhausted my music taste/ collection. So now my blogs are going to be incredibly dull/ under-informed/ written without my usual expert critiques. So, enjoy.

I needed a band to write about, so I scanned through some of my friend's spotify accounts to see what they were listening to. Then, I found Beach House, and they are very soft, mellow, but catchy. They have a real XX and Broken Bell vibe to their music, which I can get into.

Here is some of my favorite tracks that I have found so far:

This band seems so ACL to me, or like they would just fit right in. The vocals kind of a distant- muffled sound to them, which remind me of am artist I posted about a while back, Zola Jesus.

This one reminds me of an 8-bit game, like mario or something, with the real sharp/ high keyboardy notes in the beginning. The vocals sometimes sound a bit off, which alarms me a little, but hey, nobody's perfect.

This one starts off really slowly, but then HOHO, a new vocalist? I love it! I actually like this lady better than the usual lead.

One thing that's super cool about this band is that they do vinyl recording, which I know you are all about.

Here is a link to the full album:

Anywhoo, I really like Beach House, they would be a great band to drift to sleep to, or perhaps to play as a background track for my philosophical shower thinking sessions.

George Watsky

First of all, allow me to introduce you to future husband, George Watsky.

What a dooofy nerdy white guy, right? BUT DAMN, can he rap, and FAST. This was his break-out youtube video that made him a bit famous.

I first discovered George Watsky through Speech & Debate when looking for a poetry pieces to perform, Watsky is a famous slam poet who writes just gorgeous poems that are typically a bit controversial, but they always really sit well with me and make me re-think things. Plus they are always PUN LOADED, which I am a sucker for.

Here's a song featuring Kate Nash, 'Hey Asshole'

The song is pretty goofy, here are some of the lyrics:

Got the power of my will
I don't needa to win a mil
But I'm looking at window sill
Gotta take a bitter pill
Gonna pay for what I did to my head and my heart'll foot the bill
Got a foot in my mouth and because I'm kicking myself I developed a habit of knocking out my front tooth
Looking uncouth
Want to hear the truth
Give it to me straight
151 proof
Telling myself it'll happen when I'm happy but I'm climbing up a ladder that has got no end
Hung up on a rung I'll never make it to the top, I'm looking at the bottom and I must descend
All I want to do is buck this trend
Everybody need a buck to spend
And I'll be working on myself, til I work on someone else, til I get there Ima just pretend

While Watsky is typically a very ironic, witty guy, this song is a bit harder/ touches on depression. His songs/ poems always have a tinge of silliness to them, but they typically touch on more serious stuff too.

Here's a really fun/ silly cover of Kanye and Jay-Z's 'Niggas in Paris'

Here's something that some might not consider music, because it's just him doing slam poetry, but he is definitely speaking in a certain pattern/ rhythm that gives it a musical quality. This also gives a look at what an incredible slam poet/ lyricist he is.

So while Watsky might not exactly be Rock & Roll, I just wanted to share some links to some raps/ poems that I'm passionate about and enjoy.

Stevie Wonder

I was so excited to hear we would be listening to Stevie Wonder in class. Stevie's music is the perfect blend of funk, jazz, and soul. Is it weird that I have a little bit of a crush on him? He is so cute and always smiling and such a passionate guy. Let's just say, I wouldn't be opposed to him serenading me with 'Isn't she Lovely". Anyways, I have always loved Stevie Wonder, his songs were played for me by my parents allllll the time when I was a tot, so his music makes me a bit nostalgic. I also saw Stevie Wonder live at ACL two years ago, and he was AMAZING. Except for a bit of awkward and aimless wandering at the very end of the concert, I was so stunned at how successfully he could maneuver his way between different instruments and keep so perfectly in time with his band while being blind. He seriously is such an incredible inspiration to all striving musicians or people with disabilities, and I have Stevie Fever.

"Isn't She Lovely"

My dad used to sing this one to me when I was little. It's like a slower funk, and it's very romantic and soothing. The music is also slow on this track that it allows me to focus more on his incredible Voice. There's also a kind of funky-sounding instrument, that I'm 99% sure is a sax (but it's a bit harmonica sounding?), that plays awesome little riffs throughout the song that I love.

"Superstition"

Everyone went APE when he played this song at ACL, and it was insane. This song will always be my favorite, I think it is the most catchy and upbeat of his work. I love that you are given the chance to see him grooving in this video too. He is so passionate, and I love his head bobbing and how he is always smiling so big when he is given a break between lyrics. I also love the fact that, although not demonstrated in this video, he could play almost every instrumental part of this song himself, which is incredible enough for a fully-abled person, let alone someone who is blind.

I think Stevie is a rock & roll legend, and he is easily in my top 10 favorite musicians of all time.

Zac Brown Band (Make up Blog for Week 6)

Okay, so up until recently I have been anti-country, not having it. And now, I am the biggest convert ever. The Zac Brown Band...gets me. Oh man, there has never been a band that I have so consistently loved/ thoroughly enjoyed every song they put out. Their music ranges from soft/ a bit melancholy to upbeat and fun, and I feel like they have a song for any mood I could be experiencing.

Here is some of their most somber stuff:

Not that I cry often, but if I needed a sound track, both of those would easily suffice. Anyways, their harmonization is AMAZING, and I am addicted to Zac Brown's voice. I noticed the other day, I also typically like male country singers significantly more than female ones. But that could have to do with the fact that I mentally view all of them as Dolly Parton.

And now, get ready to want to be relaxin' on the beach, because these two songs make me crave a vacation.

Like, what am I doing sitting on the couch/ watching netflix, I want the beach. Anyways, what a transition from their other songs! Completely different moods and sounds!

Anyways, while I have made giant strides in the Country direction, I still have my doubts. So far, I've discovered that I really love about 25% of country, I think 50% is good/ not terrible, and I absolutely hate the other 25%. I heard a song the other day about a man wanting to drink a beer with Jesus and I wanted to claw my radio out of my car.

Zac Brown is coming to Austin on April 21, and I REALLY want to go!!!!

Curtis Mayfield (Make up Blog for Week 6)

The father of funk, what a guy. Not only does he make such smooth, catchy, snap-yo-fingas worthy tracks, but he is also a man of infinite feats and astounding accomplishments, such as being the creator of the soundtrack to "Superfly", being a two-time-inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and an enormous influence during the civil rights movements, his music giving hope and comfort to struggling and fighting African Americans.

In spite of my blinding white-ness, I wish this track was constantly playing in the background of my everyday life, like when I walk into a room with a now dramatic entrance, or anytime I do anything impressive or celebration-worthy. The drums in this song are AWESOME, if I could ever learn one instrument it would be the drums, and this song makes me desire the ability to play the drums more than usual. I also love any song that has accompaniment from brass/ wind instruments, and this song is loaded with a lil' symphony.

I love the super whammy-funky guitar in this one, it's almost trippy actually. However, the titles of the song troubles me because I feel like the music is rather upbeat and happy-sounding in contrast to such an ominous title.

Here are some lyrics:

Said he'd see him home
But his hope was a rope
And he should've known
It's hard to understand
That there's love in this man
I'm sure all would agree
That his misery was his
Woman and things
Now Freddie's dead
That's what I said

...well that got heavy and uncomfortable fast. anyways interesting lyrics and music combo.

Anywhoo, I really like Curtis Mayfield's music, and would listen to it on my own time.

Rizzle Kicks

For Rizzle my nizzle.

Rizzle Kicks is a hip-hop duo from England, consisting of two 20 year old guys. One of the guys lays the tracks while the other sings/ raps over the tune. They're real big in the big Brit right now with over a million copies of their first and only album sold, but they're not quite as big of a deal in the US yet.

The music is real weird mash-up style, ranging from country/ banjo backgrounds to trumpets to kind of mariachi sounding music. But I can dig it, I'm a versatile lady.

Here are my favorite songs:

"Down with the Trumpets"

The music of this song really reminds me of that relatively new Train song, "50 Ways to Say Goodbye". Anyways this track is catchy AF, they both rap a bit in this song and I think they have very distinct/ different voices that I like, perhaps due to their English decent? I don't know I'm just an ignorant American.

"Demolition Man"

The music in the beginning really reminds me of Nick Waterhouse, kind of jazzy-y and brass-y. I also hear a ton of influence from the Gorillaz in their music, which I love love love.

Here are a couple more kick'n songs:

Here's a mix with Ed Sheeran

And "Miss Cigarette"

Joni Mitchell

First of all, I did NOT know Joni Mitchell wrote Big Yellow Taxi, the Counting Crows cover of that song is in my top 50 favorite songs of all time. This is AWESOME go Joni!

Anyways, I really like Joni Mitchell, but I get a little tired of listening to her after about 6 songs. I think he has an incredibly unique an all-her-own voice which has such an impressive range, but I often find myself growing weary of her sticking mainly to such a high octave and it unsettles me a lil bit. It also makes my throat hurt just thinking about singing that high.

Here is my favorite song of hers:

I think Joni Mitchell had a big influence on Sarah Barielles, because her music is so reflective of Joni's works.

However, while researching her I found a HELLA lot of tight mixes she has been featured in and other cool works she's done. She has been sampled in a ton of hiphop works, and has had countless covers done of her work.

Like here is a mix with her and Janet Jackson..is this real life?

How awesomely old school was that? Absolutely perfect.

Here, Kanye West sampled Joni's Song "River"

Crazy, right? Joni is e'rywhere. Anyways, love Joni, but I struggle to listen to a whole album of hers at a time.

JT IS BRINGING SEXY BACK AGAIN

It's official: JT is making a comeback from his 4 year music hiatus and is dropping a new album this march called "20/20"....and I could not be more excited. I LOVE JT. That boy can sing, dance, act, and be wonderfully good looking at the same time. Truly mistifying.

However, there's one gray cloud looming over my new album excitement...the one song "Suit and Tie" Justin pre-released off of his new album....kind of tanks.

Have a listen

So lack luster, right? The music is so bland/ repetitive and not even catchy to begin with. Then, Justin sings in like the same tone/ does not do any adventurous or challenging singing in this song. Jay-Z isn't even good in this song. It's just too slow, not catchy, and a flop.

HOWEVER I HAVE NOT LOST HOPE:

Here are some of my all time favorite Justin songs that give me the strength to have faith in his new album:

"LoveStoned" will ALWAYS be my favorite:

Justin is freaky and he knows it...but he's freaky and I like it. Maybe it's stupid but I love that he does the beat-boxing himself in the background, and the hook is so damn catchy. So much love.

Next, of course, is "Cry me a River"

It starts off with some fancy-opera like singing, very classy, then here comes Justin. He does some falsetto and stuff in this song I can get into, and I usually hate falsetto.

"Carry Out", the ultimate metaphor for Women to fast food.

Let's just take a look at some lyric highlights from this song:

Baby, you looking fine
I have you open all night like you I.H.O.P.
I take you home, baby, let you keep me company
You gimme some of you, I give you some of me

You look good, baby, must taste heavenly
I'm pretty sure that you got your own recipe
So pick it up, pick it up, yeah, I like you
I just can't get enough I gotta drive through

How absolutely stupid and ridiculous is that? However, I find it hilariously entertaining. Plus I LOVE me the Timbaland, seriously he and JT are the dream team.

Anyways, very excited, I'll do another JT Post once the new album comes out.

Parliament/ Funkadelic/ George Clinton/ Whatever

Parliament (and all it's other spin off bands and stuff) is definitely in my top 3 favorite bands we've listened to in class so far this year. They have elements of Hip Hop, Funk, and Techno, all 3 of which are a win for me.

My absolute jam is "Flashlight".

It is so Fresh Prince of Bel Air-esque, it makes me want to put hydraulics in my car and bounce around town while blasting this song. Unfortunately (as I'm sure the entire world is well aware of) I am way to white to successfully pull this off. Anyways I love the weird crazy keyboard the DJ scratching sounds. However, the lyrics make little to no sense/ don't appear to have a deeper meaning:

ow, I lay me down to sleep
Ooh, I just can't find a beat
Flash light (ohh, I will never dance!)
Flash light [x3]

Ha da da dee da hada hada da da

Oh, it's no use!

Flash light
Red light
Neon light
Ooh, stop light

Am I supposed to make something out of that? Who knows? However the funk is so full force in this song that I don't even care.

My other favorite is definitely "Atomic Dog" by George Clinton

First of all can we just acknowledge the beauty of this Music Video. It is so 80's and old MTV and I adore it. It gets a little weird when everyone is dressing up as cats and stuff but whatever. This song used to be in TV and movies alllll the time when I was tot, that "BOW WOW WOW YIPPIE YO YIPPIE YAY" line especially gets me.

Parliament is so old school and crazy weird, and they have a big place in my heart. There are few things I love more than 70/80's funk and Parliament gets me.

Let It Be

First of all, can I just say what goofballs the beatles look like right now in their scruffy hippie stage. Paul McCartney's beard is HEFTY and everyone has such a mop-top it is ridiculous.

Listening to this album makes me a little sad though, knowing it is the symbol of the end of an era.

Here are my favorite songs off of the album:

"Across the Universe"

This one is super acoustic/ slower, with hints of the sitar and other foreign sounding instruments. I also think the lyrics are dreamy, and they almost foreshaddow the oncoming break up:

Sounds of laughter, shades of life
Are ringing through my opened ears
Inciting and inviting me.
Limitless undying love, which
Shines around me like a million suns,
It calls me on and on across the universe

The lyrics insinuate a call to a new, better world and life. A calling for the
Beatles to drift toward their own destined paths. Life, man.

Of course, "Let it Be"

GET IT bearded Paul. Oh man, Paul is easily my favorite Beatle, I still have such a crush on him in his teen-heart throb days. Once again, this song is a bit somber/ nostalgic, and continues my sadness about their break up.

Finally, "Get Back"

This one features a kind of western sounding guitar, bringing back their sometimes country-sounding theme. There's also some funky keyboard in here I can dig.

In short, while I have much love for this album, it is not my favorite.

Bubbly for the Buble

So, I know Michael Buble is already very well known/ I am not presenting any new information, but I just had a re-discovery of how much I love him and I want the world to know it.

My recent Buble-kick began this december, when I popped his Christmas CD in my car and had a holly -jolly ride to school every morning with Michael serenading me as I sped to make it to class on time. Michael is one of those artists that I think shines so brightly because he is so ridiculously talented/ his voice is so unique and powerful that he doesn't have need to have a synthesized pop beat to accompany his voice. In fact, one of my favorite things about Buble's music besides his melodic voice is his common theme of having an orchestra/ wind-instrument collection playing the music in his tracks. It's usually very trumpet/piano/ bass heavy, and it makes me want to snap my fingers and waggle my finger.

My all time favorite:

Feeling Good:

He is the sexy smooth jazz god. This song also almost has a James Bond theme to it, especially present at 1:35.

Also, I know it's past Christmas so this song is not really one to be played in January, BUT HE IS JUST SO GOOD:

Seriously, while this isn't even really comparable to Mariah Carey's version since they are entirely different both musically and vocally, I prefer this version to hers. And that is saying something, cause Mariah's version is my Christmas jam.

But his voice is almost eerily good, there is a quality to it that I can't quite put my finger on that makes it magical.

And finally, I know this isn't super relevant to Michael's talent, but this seriously never fails to make me laugh. Michael's most popular song "Haven't met you Yet" vs. his very own Bad Lip Reading spoof, "Russian Unicorn"

Childish Gambino (Donald Glover)

Mr. Glover was first introduced to me through one of my favorite TV Shows, Community. And there is no other way to express my admiration for him other than very strong attraction and buckets of love. He and my other love, Justin Timberlake (go ahead, judge me) are like quadruple threats, dancin, singin, actin, and being good looking. Anywhoo, my older brother played Gambino's first album, Culdesac, about 2 years ago without telling me it was Donald Glover, who only knew then from Community, and there was a big ol' jaw drop moment.
My FAVORITE thing by far about Childish Gambino's music is the lyrics. This man is a pun wizard, I actually laugh aloud at some of his lyrics. I will post a few of my favorites:

His most popular song "Freaks and Geeks" is not my favorite song musically, but definitely lyrically. Here are some stand out lines:

I am runnin' this bitch, you are just a dog walker

Took the G out your waffle, all you got left is your ego

..and I wanted to include more but honestly they're a bit profane and I feel awkward posting them here, so that may be left up to individual research.

Aight, now here are my favorite songs and mash-ups,

"Heartbeat" off of his album, Camp. This one is a bit slower at parts, but daaaaaaaaaaaamn is it catchy. The music also has some techno-y keyboard elements, very similar to that of the DJ, Justice.

Here is my favorite mash-up "Try Outs" by Javelin, made from Gambino's original song, "Let Me Dope You". And the best part is, I actually hate the original version of this song, so Javelin turned something horrid into something absolutely beautiful.

And finally, here is my other favorite mash-up, "Turd in the Oven", which is a mash-up with Vampire Weekend's "Diplomat's Son". LOL at the title, originated from the lyric "my shit is hot shit, like a turd in the oven". That sounds like a Mr. A quote if I've ever heard one, except he might go for the sundae route.

Anyways, I have seen Gambino live at Stubbs and I was not disappointed, I loved his show. PLUS, Gambino's music is available for free download on his blogs and what not, which I think is so awesome.

Simon and Garfunkel Round 2

So, I really like Simon and Garfunkel and my parents always give me a very hard time for liking them. Why is this, is it a big joke and everyone actually thinks they're terrible except for me? What is this?

Anyways, I liked their first album that we listened to in class, and I like Bridge Over Troubled Water even more, go figure. Their genre is so hard for me to decipher, I guess it would fall under the big-umbrella of soft-rock, with elements of folk and jazz.

My main jams:

"The Boxer"

Being wildly instrumentally challenged, I have been re-listening over and over to a segment around 0:36  and 2:54 to decipher this old-timey instrument sound that I like. What is that? Anyways, my FAVORITE parts of the song are the "Lie-la-lie" refrain with the sweet drum kick that sounds like whip snap or something. It makes me feel like I'm in a western, and some ish is going down.

"Cecilia"

I feel like this is either in a million movies, or has been in my life is multiple other ways that I can't quite name. But I definitely have this song in my subconscious memory. I love the bongo-sounding drums and clapping as the main method of keeping the beat, very old school. But damn this song is catchy, it reminds me so much of the Beatles too, both lyrically and instrumentally. I also dig the xylophone solo.

In short, I really like Simon and Garfunkel, they are in my top 3 favorite bands to listen to in class. I hope we continue listening to their albums.

Black Sabbath

So, when we first started listening to Black Sabbath's first album, I was like no no nooo, this is not for me. I know how much Mr. A hates when we stereotype music into strict genres and make judgement based upon them, but I just really don't do metal. No. Not for me. And I know that Sabbath isn't even that heavy, I just wasn't having it. It sounded like the track list of Guitar Hero, and without my toy guitar to button push/ rock out on, I was left unsatisfied.

So, for the sake of forced tolerance and learning, I have forced myself to listen to more of their work and find some I like.

I guess I sort of like "Children of the Grave". It's one of those songs that if I was listening to while driving, I would be rapidly speeding or doing something stupid and reckless.

Also, "Wizard" is okay with me.

First of all, harmonica = yes. Any song with harmonica gains an automatic 2 points on a 10 point song scale, for me at least. Also, there are some pretty sweet guitar riffs in this song.

I just can't get into this genre of music. I feel like the only way I would ever really enjoy this music is if I was magically in Freaks and Geeks smoking a joint with James Franco. I just, I can't sing along, hum, or most importantly, wave my hands in the air like I just don't care, Frankly, it just makes me anxious and gives me a lil' bit of a headache.

The Cults

The Cults were an ACL discovery about a year ago, I do believe.

Here is my favorite, "Go Outside"

And here is probably their most popular song, "Never Saw the Point"

I personally find them super catchy and easy to listen to, I find that their music style is comparable to that of black keys or the XX, their music is a bit slow with heavy bass and their is always the presence of a quirky instrument like a xylophone or a funky keyboard.

One thing I wish that Cults would do is give their music a larger sound variety; if I am passively listening to their album, I can barely notice song changes or transitions. One band that I think has incredible versatility is Imagine Dragons, their style ranges from somber Coldplay sounding to almost dubstep-y then super upbeat and pop-like. Seriously, I am obsessed. But this blog post is about Cults, so I'll resist.

Here are some more jams I really like:

OH YEAH and one more cool thing, these guys do vinyl recording. That's pretty rad.

CEO out.
